  158.              CONCLUDING REMARKS ON MATTHEW'S GOSPEL.

  160.  Matthew being one of the twelve apostles, and early called to
  161.  the apostleship, and from the time of his call a constant
  162.  attendant on our Saviour, was perfectly well qualified to write
  163.  fully the history of his life.  He relates what he saw and
  164.  heard.  "He is eminently distinguished for the distinctness and
  165.  particularity with which he has related many of our Lord's
  166.  discourses and moral instructions.  Of these his sermon on the
  167.  mount, his charge to the apostles, his illustrations of the
  168.  nature of his kingdom, and his prophecy on mount Olivet, are
  169.  examples.  He has also wonderfully united simplicity and energy
  170.  in relating the replies of his Master to the cavils of his
  171.  adversaries."  "There is not," as Dr. A. Clarke justly remarks,
  172.  "one truth or doctrine, in the whole oracles of God, which is
  173.  not taught in this Evangelist.  The outlines of the whole
  174.  spiritual system are here correctly laid down:  even Paul
  175.  himself has added nothing:  he has amplified and illustrated the
  176.  truths contained in this Gospel;--under the inspiration of the
  177.  Holy Ghost, neither he, nor any of the other apostles, have
  178.  brought to light one truth, the prototype of which has not been
  179.  found in the words and acts of our blessed Lord as related by
  180.  Matthew."

  305.    Capernaum was a city of Galilee, (Lu 4:31,) situated on the
  306.    confines of Zebulun, and Naphtali, (Mt 4:13,) on the western
  307.    border of the lake of Tiberias, (Joh 6:59,) and in the land of
  308.    Gennesaret, (ch. 6:53; Mt 14:34,) where Josephus places a
  309.    spring of excellent water called Capernaum.  Dr. Lightfoot
  310.    places it between Tiberias and Tarichea, about two miles from
  311.    the former; and Dr. Richardson, in passing through the plain
  312.    of Gennesaret, was told by the natives that the ruins of
  313.    Capernaum were quite near.  The Arab station and ruins
  314.    mentioned by Mr. Buckingham, said to have been formerly called
  315.    Capharnaoom, situated on the edge of the lake from nine to
  316.    twelve miles N. N. E.  of Tiberias, bearing the name of
  317.    Talhewn, or as Burckhardt writes it, Tel Houm, appear too far
  318.    north for its site.
